Zattoo in improved quality on Swisscom's VDSL network
From now on, Swisscom and Zattoo will be working together in the area of online television. Swisscom VDSL customers are set to benefit from the partnership, as they will be able to receive the 20 most popular Zattoo TV channels of the more than 70 available in improved quality (HiQ) free of charge.
Watching television via the Internet has become extremely popular. In Switzerland alone, the IPTV platform Zattoo currently has close to 700,000 registered users, and in Europe this figure is already approaching 2.5 million. Thanks to Swisscom's special IP and network technology, Zattoo can now be received in improved quality via the Swisscom VDSL (Very High Speed Digital Subscriber Line) network. The service will initially be launched as a Beta version and then further improved over the coming weeks and months, taking into account customer feedback.
Swisscom is Switzerland's leading telecoms provider, with over 5 million mobile customers and around 5.3 million fixed-lines (including more than 1.6 million broadband connections). Alongside the traditional product and service offerings in the area of telecommunications, Swisscom has a strategic focus on the distribution of video content, currently with, for example, Bluewin TV and Bluewin TV mobile.
Zattoo is a TV distribution service which transmits television channels onto the computer. Zattoo is free of charge and does not require any additional hardware. Users download the software, the Zattoo Player, from www.zattoo.com and can then watch television on their computers within the space of a few minutes. Zattoo is already available in seven European countries besides Switzerland: Belgium, Denmark, Germany, France, the UK, Norway and Spain.
The following channels can be received in improved quality:
German > SF1, SF2, SFinfo, ARD, ZDF, RTL, SAT1, PRO7, VOX, Eurosport
French > TSR1, TSR2, TF1, France 2, France 3, M6
Italian > TSI1, TSI2, RAI 1, Canale 5
Partnership between Zattoo and Swisscom
By offering Zattoo HiQ , Swisscom is highlighting the video compatibility benefits of a high bandwidth network. Many customers spend a lot of time in front of their PCs e-mailing, chatting and surfing. But they still don't want to miss their favourite programmes or films. Live television on the computer is a real alternative to conventional television for these customers and, thanks to the improved image quality, will now become even more attractive.
The partnership is set to benefit all concerned: while Zattoo will improve the customer experience, Swisscom is expanding its services and customers will benefit from the improved image quality.
Straightforward setup
Customers with a Swisscom VDSL connection who have installed the ZattooPlayer and set up a user account at www.zattoo.com can check out and experience the improved quality of the 20 channels free of charge right away. Today, more than 100,000 customers already have access to VDSL technology. Those who are not yet VDSL customers can check at www.swisscom.com/checker whether their connection is suitable for receiving the 20 channels in improved quality. Zattoo HiQ is available if the Swisscom Checker displays the confirmation "Bluewin TV available".
The basic requirement for use of this service is an Infinity or Bluewin TV subscription. Due to the high bandwidths, Zattoo HiQ cannot be used via standard WLAN.
