Swisscom's business activities are primarily focused on the home market of Switzerland. As market leader, Swisscom and its Group companies cover at least two-thirds of domestic demand for voice and data communications services and products for residential and business applications. Under its licence to provide basic service provision nation-wide, Swisscom also serves remote parts of the country.

The company's special situation, with the Swiss Confederation as majority shareholder, limits its opportunities for international operations. The political process to largely privatise the company is in progress but will take some time to complete. Swisscom is nevertheless able to take up business activities in foreign markets or invest in foreign companies, provided such moves support the core business or comply with the strategic objectives of its majority shareholder. This is also illustrated by its takeover of the Italian provider Fastweb in May 2007, which has allowed Swisscom to be present in one of Europe's most attractive broadband markets.

One exclusively international Swisscom business field is the provision of broadband and Internet-based services for hotel guests and conference participants: Swisscom operates local networks in hotels and convention centres in Western and South-Eastern Europe as well as in the USA through a subsidiary. To consolidate its market position in this segment, Swisscom enters into partnerships with leading international hotel chains.
