Swisscom networks: basis for a lively market presence

Various telecoms service providers in Switzerland maintain their own network infrastructures. Swisscom operates a fixed network with copper and fibre-optic lines as well as a latest-generation mobile communications network. The network infrastructure for wired and mobile voice and data communications offers blanket coverage throughout Switzerland.

Orange and Sunrise, amongst others, operate their own networks for mobile communications and to some extent for fixed-line services. Cablecom and the other cable network providers deliver their communications services over the existing cable TV network, with around 2.5 million Internet and telephony capable connections.

Most of Swisscom's competitors, including those that operate their own networks, also use Swisscom's comprehensive network infrastructure as a basis for their own network, telecommunications and value-added services.

Telecoms products and services for residential customers are sold via retail channels and online shops. Swisscom, Sunrise and Orange operate their own chain of stores in Switzerland: with Swisscom Shops in all cities and conurbations in Switzerland, Swisscom boasts the densest network of retail outlets for telecommunications products.

Swisscom is responsible for the nation-wide provision of basic services via analog and digital network connections. Swisscom is also the only company on the Swiss telecoms market to operate public payphones nation-wide. In line with this, Swisscom also serves remote areas which are not canvassed by other market players for reasons of profitability.
