Since 2001, as part of its "Internet for Schools" initiative, Swisscom has connected every Swiss primary school at no charge; this offer has also been open to all preschools since 2009. In this way, we are making an important contribution to helping children and young people acquire at an early age the media skills needed today and learn how to use digital media in a responsible way.
In particular, the ability to assess and judge the quality and relevance of information is becoming increasingly important. This offer will be kept in place and expanded as part of the "School Service" programme.
The scope of services in "Internet for Schools"
Swisscom offers the cantons and the Swiss Federation of Private Schools (SFPS) a free educational network which integrates all of the schools' local area networks (LANs) into a single communication infrastructure. In specific terms, schools receive an Internet connection with the best possible bandwidth and are connected to the canton's educational network.
Most cantons have two such educational networks, one which covers primary and secondary level I and the other secondary level II. This allows the cantons to adapt the networks to security requirements independently of one another.
Managed firewall to protect the networks from external attacks.
Web content screening
Service for limiting access from the networks. Prevents, for instance, access to pornographic content or websites which glorify violence.
"School Service" consists of the following free educational offers:
