Public Wireless LAN lets you surf with your notebook or mobile phone – at more than 1,200 hotspots in Switzerland and over 65,000 places worldwide.

What can Public Wireless LAN do?

With your wireless LAN compatible notebook or mobile, you surf just as fast when you're out and about as at home. Thanks to speeds of up to 5 Mbps, you can send even large amounts of data in no time. At the hotspot, you just start your Internet browser and you're already online, without any wires or additional software.

Requirements

In addition to a wireless LAN capable notebook or mobile, as a Swisscom customer you will need a NATEL® or Internet subscription.
If you don't have a Swisscom subscription yet, you can buy a Value Card or purchase connections to Public Wireless LAN directly from your credit card.

Billing is carried out in 15 minutes blocks.

Tariffs with a NATEL® or DSL subscription for residential customers

Public Wireless LAN is included with every NATEL® subscription (NATEL® basic liberty, NATEL® swiss liberty, NATEL® pro liberty, NATEL® basic xtra-liberty, NATEL® swiss xtra-liberty plus).
Customers with a NATEL® or a popular DSL subscription are invoiced on a
monthly basis.

Tariffs with NATEL® BeFree, NATEL® liberty piccolo, NATEL® liberty mezzo, NATEL® liberty grande und NATEL® xtra-liberty mezzo

Surfing at hot spots up to the free data volume per month. Once the free data volume is reached, every further MB costs CHF 0.10, however not more than
CHF 5.- per day. Abroad the charge is CHF 0.60/min.

Tariffs without NATEL® subscription: With Value Card or credit card

Value Cards are available at all hotspots, in the Swisscom Shop or in the Online Shop.

When registering, use the credit card to select the credit you require and simply enter your card number.

It is only possible to pay with Value Cards or credit cards at Swisscom hotspots in Switzerland.

Every time you log out or if the connection is lost the usage of the online credit is interrupted.
Once you have started using an online credit it must be used up within the validity period, otherwise it will be forfeited.

Each further 15 minutes CHF 1.-

Public Wireless LAN Hour Option 200 is worthwhile if you regularly surf for more than 13 hours per month at Swisscom Hotspots in Switzerland.

A Swisscom NATEL® subscription is required.

Please note: PWLAN Hour Option 200 cannot be combined with a NATEL® Data and Surf subscription.

What is VPN Client software?

With a VPN Client Software you can encrypt your data for safe transmission via the Internet. The VPN Client from Swisscom which you can download here for free provides optimal protection for you. The company-based VPN solution guarantees maximum security for access to company data.

Instructions Public Wireless LAN

You do not need the free VPN software if:

  • you already establish VPN-protected connections with your corporate network
  • you login with the data SIM card of your PC (without user ID and SMS password) at the Hotspot (Option EAP-SIM)
  • you use Mobile Unlimited from Swisscom with the PC card that goes with it
  • you do not transfer any sensitive data

Set up VPN Client for use in the Hotspot

Please execute the following steps in the order indicated:

You have not installed VPN Client yet

 

  • Step 1: Install VPN Client
  • Step 2: Set up a certificate for Public Wireless LAN
  • Step 3: Delete installation data

You have already installed a VPN Client from Cisco Networks

  • Step 1: Adjust configuration for Public Wireless LAN on an existing Cisco VPN Client
  • Step 2: Set up a certificate for Public Wireless LAN
  • Step 3: Delete installation data

You have installed a different VPN Client

  • Step 1: Set up a certificate for Public Wireless LAN
  • Step 2: Delete installation data

Use VPN Client at the Hotspot

Establish a VPN connection

 

  • Login at the Hotspot as usual, i.e. use your mobile number or your user ID and enter your password
  • Start VPN Client, as soon as the connection has been established. Select the VPN connection "Swisscom PWLAN".
  • A secure VPN connection is now established. This may take a few seconds. The programme monitor in the system bar of your PC will now indicate a secure connection.

Please note: During the VPN connection, the home page of the Hotspot is no longer available.

Close VPN connection

  • 1. Using the system bar (programme monitor) switch to VPN Client.
  • 2. Close the VPN connection (Disconnect button for the connection "Swisscom PWLAN").
  • 3. You can now return to the home page of the Hotspot or terminate the connection via the logout window.

Please note: If your attention is drawn to an existing VPN connection, update the Hotspot window via the menu bar of the browser or by clicking on the button "Home page".

Terminate your Hotspot connection

  • 1. Terminate the VPN connection first (see above).
  • 2. If your attention is drawn to an existing VPN connection, update the Hotspot window via the menu bar of the browser or by clicking on the button "Home page".
  • 3. Now logout at the Hotspot as usual.
