E-mail

E-mail

E-mail on the iPhone works precisely the same way as it does on your computer. iPhone supports many popular e-mail servers and providers, such as Bluewin E-Mail, Microsoft Exchange, MobileMe, Yahoo! Mail, Google Mail, etc.

Requirements

You should have the following details to hand to enable you to set up your e-mail successfully:

  • Your e-mail provider
  • User name for the e-mail account
  • Password for the e-mail account

If you are unsure about these details, please contact your e-mail provider.

Note
When you set up your Bluewin E-Mail account, you have to enter the password for the email account (not the Swisscom Login password). If you have a problem with your password or forget your email password, you can set a new password in the Swisscom Customer Center. If so, you also have to update the password for the mail client on your PC (Outlook, Windows Mail, Incredimail, etc.) or Mac (Entourage, Apple Mail).

Setting up an e-mail account

Step 1
Open the "Settings" menu on your iPhone.

Step 2
Select "Mail, Contacts, Calendar".

Step 3
Click "Add Account" and tap "Next".

Step 4
Enter your name, your e-mail address and your password and confirm your entry by tapping "Save" (top right). Your iPhone performs the rest of the configurations automatically.

Once you have successfully set up your e-mail account, the entry is displayed under Accounts.

Please note
If your iPhone cannot automatically request the rest of the account information, you must end the configuration yourself.

If this applies, continue to step 5.

Step 5
All the following settings and details depend on your e-mail provider who must give you the relevant information. Fictional information is used in the example below.

Select POP or IMAP (transmission protocol), enter your name and email address. Your email address is applied as the default description.

Step 6
Enter the following details for "Incoming Mail Server":
  • Hostname: imaps.example.ch
  • User name: j.doe@example.ch
  • Password: your password
At "Server for outgoing e-mails" enter the following information:
  • Hostname: smtpauths.example.ch
  • User name: j.doe@example.ch
  • Password: Your password

Step 7
Tap "Save" (top right) to apply the settings.

What do I need the e-mail push function for

  • You can receive your emails manually or, if you have a push account (such as Microsoft Exchange), you can have your emails retrieved automatically.
  • If there is new information available, such as incoming emails, this information is automatically forwarded to your iPhone provided you have activated the push function.
  • MobileMe and Exchange also synchronize with your contacts, calendar and bookmarks (MobileMe only) with the push transfer if these objects are selected in the account settings.
  • Synchronized information is automatically transferred via your wireless connection. You don't have to connect your iPhone to the computer to sync it.

How do I activate the push function?

Tap "Settings" > "Auto-Check" if you want to activate or deactivate the push function. To save your battery you can also manually set the intervals at which your email is retrieved (every 15 minutes, every 30 minutes, hourly or manually). How do I activate the push function?
