Internet access
You can use your iPhone to surf the Internet conveniently with 3G and WLAN. Use the preinstalled Safari browser to do this.
How do I connect my iPhone to the Internet?
There are two ways of connecting your iPhone to the Internet:
- Via the mobile phone network (with different speeds depending on your location: EDGE or 3G).
- Via a private WLAN (your wireless Internet access at home) or via a Hotspot (Public Wireless LAN Internet access).
Displaying the connection
If you have deactivated WLAN or don't have WLAN access, your iPhone is connected to the Internet via the mobile network. The following icons show you the network to which your iPhone is connected:
 |
: |
connected to a WLAN network – very fast connection |
 |

connected to the 3G network – fast connection |
 |

connected to the EDGE network – medium-fast connection |
 |
: |
connected to the GPRS network – slow connection |
How can I tell whether my iPhone is connected to the Internet?
: This icon indicates network activity or wireless synchronization. If you are not connected via free WLAN access, data usage is charged to your subscription (if you select "Login with mobile phone number"). Alternatively, you can log in and pay by credit card, Value Card or Roaming Partner. Remember that many of the programs on your iPhone automatically connect to the Internet.
Consequently, active connections are not only established by the Safari browser.
Which data usage is charged to my data subscription?
When you create an active Internet connection on your iPhone via Safari or any other program and are connected to the mobile network or to a Swisscom hotspot (Network: Mobile), the costs for the data exchanged are charged to your data credit. As regards subscriptions or data options without data included, Internet access is charged according to your price plan. If you are connected with a private or free WLAN connection, the data is not charged to the subscription.
Note
The data counter in the iPhone only allows for connections made via the mobile network. Access via Swisscom hotspots (Network: Mobile) is deducted from the data credit balance or billed on the basis of your NATEL® contract. However, this amount is neither counted nor shown on the iPhone.
