Canton of St. GallenA smooth transition into the future - the Canton of St. Gallen uses IP­based telephony

Dienst für Informatikplanung (DIP) and IG Kommunikationsnetz St. Gallen (IG KOMSG) operate the communications networks for both local and cantonal authorities in St. Gallen, East Switzerland. The new IP­based telephony solution from Swisscom has made communication between administrative agencies more efficient and simpler.

Once it became clear that the existing telephone system was reaching the end of its useful life, Dienst für Informatikplanung started looking for a future-proof solution. The new platform needed to be standardised, homogenous and scaleable. In addition to this, DIP was aiming for an economically sound hybrid solution in order to keep conventional terminals in use for as long as possible, and to enter step by step into the age of VoIP.

The Head of DIP is very pleased with the outstanding flexibility of the new telephone platform. Amongst other things, it permits smooth integration of a voice mail system and CTI functionalities. What’s more, VoIP equipment will only be introduced where it is operationally and economically feasible. Standard telephony continues to function superbly on the new IP basis.
