Otto Fischer AG, the second-largest Swiss distributor of electronics equipment, has hugely improved both precision and productivity. Thanks to mobile data terminals, the entire order and delivery process is now electronic. The company’s customers also benefit, as deliveries now arrive more punctually than ever at the installation site on the morning before work begins.

Draft delivery notes had been used at the company for a long time for picking orders, and this was considered the best method. Nevertheless, this traditional way of doing things meant that Otto Fischer was increasingly coming up against the limits of its capacity. Nowadays, new handheld devices mean that the entire order and delivery process takes place electronically with no discontinuity of media, both in the warehouse and on the road. These smart little handheld devices scan each individual item, and communicate with the company’s planning and scheduling systems via WLAN or GPRS.

With 23% higher warehouse productivity, a negligible error rate and complete transparency in each step of the process, Otto Fischer has found a shortcut to success by introducing the mobile data terminals. The company is also delighted about collaborating with Swisscom, not least because of Swisscom’s nationwide mobile network.
