SBB information technology is responsible for ensuring that the State railway’s IT systems run smoothly. They wanted to optimise work with the operating platform used throughout the company and, to achieve this, find new hardware for the workstations.
Swisscom replaced 8,500 older desktop PCs at SBB – 6,000 with laptops and then 2,500 with “Real Thin Clients”. These “Real Thin Clients” were also attractive because of their very low electricity consumption, which is 85 percent less than for the model they replaced. In addition to this, they reduced hardware costs by 50 percent and, thanks to a special operating system, there are no Windows licence fees to pay.
Swisscom planned and executed the extensive and complex task of replacing SBB’s hardware within just two months. Swiss national railways reaped the benefit of massively reduced electricity consumption (with a saving of 1,141 MWh/year) and also gained workstations with more powerful PCs.
«We have reduced electricity consumption for 19,000 workstations by a total of 25 percent»
says Peter Kummer, CIO and Head of Information Technology at SBB.
