The IT, Network & Infrastructure division is responsible for our network and IT infrastructure, which we also provide to third parties over Wholesale. Broadband requirements double in the fixed network sector every 16 months and in the mobile sector every year. This is why we invest around CHF 1.6 billion annually in expanding our infrastructure. We are by far the largest provider of fixed and mobile networks in Switzerland.
The Swisscom network
Network infrastructure forms the basis for digitisation and is a fundamental requirement for technological development. Networks provide us with both a local and global connection, and enable us all to utilise the advantages of an information society. The Swisscom network is one of the best in the world and we will do our utmost to ensure that this does not change in the future.
Swisscom operates 6 data centres in Switzerland. The IT infrastructure comprises over 140,000 virtual and physical and physical servers. Not only is the bandwidth in the networks continuously increasing, but also the use of cloud services. In 2014, we opened the most modern data centre in Switzerland in Bern. New standards were set in terms of performance, security, availability and energy efficiency.
Data ranks among the most valuable production factors in the information society. Swisscom is therefore committed to transmitting and storing information as securely and reliably as possible. Around 150 employees ensure information security, data protection and secure operation of networks and the Internet.
Reporting is divided into the segments “Residential Customers”, “Business Customers”, “Wholesale”, and “IT, Network & Infrastructure”, which are grouped under Swisscom Switzerland, as well as “Fastweb” and “Other Operating Segments”. In addition, “Group Headquarters”, which includes non-allocated costs, is disclosed separately in segment reporting. As the IT, Network & Infrastructure division does not charge any costs for infrastructure maintenance and expansion to other segments, its results mainly consist of costs.
