Carbon offsetting

Swisscom has reduced its greenhouse gas emissions by more than 80% over the past few decades. Our remaining, unavoidable emissions are offset via myclimate, meaning we have become a carbon-neutral company. In addition, Swisscom is now enabling customers to carbon offset their smartphones.

Now rated a “carbon-neutral” company

Together with myclimate, we calculated the CO2 emissions generated by our operations. Through the offset and our support for climate protection projects, we ensure that we make up for these emissions in full in other ways.

How a carbon-neutral company operates

The externally verified climate report is the basis for calculating the CO2 emissions to be offset. This offset is used to cover the emissions created by our internal operations as well as upstream emissions such as those produced by energy and fuel extraction. Our calculations also include selected upstream emissions generated by our.

Carbon offset smartphones

Being a carbon-neutral company doesn’t cover the CO2 emissions from smartphones. That’s why – together with our partner South Pole – we're giving customers the opportunity to offset CO2 emissions in a carbon-neutral way for CHF 5 per device. These emissions are incurred by the manufacturing process, operations, and waste disposal.

How offsets work

The climate projection experts from South Pole use a model to help them determine the volume of emissions generated by the purchase of a smartphone – from the extraction of raw materials, through production, to delivery to the customer. The CO2 footprint of a smartphone is around 80 kg of CO2 over its entire life cycle.

We support various climate projection projects that are proven to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Amount of offset

For CHF 5 you can offset the CO2 footprint of your smartphone. South Pole invests this money in various forest conservation projects.
