Swisscom opens WAP portal to launch mobile e-commerce solution

Berne, 17 February 2000

Over twenty content providers will already be supplying their services to mobile phone users when Swisscom becomes the first Swiss mobile network operator to open its WAP portal on 21 February 2000. The "Internet in mobile phone format" concept will be fully realised right from the word go. Under rubrics such as ´News & Weather´, ´Finance´, ´Travel´, ´Games´, ´Leisure´ or ´Shopping guide´, owners of WAP-compatible mobile phones can choose from a wide range of topics and information. Swisscom´s WAP portal is available to all mobile phone users. With regard to content providers, too, Swisscom places the emphasis on an open, partnership-based model with a view to providing diversity and quality.

Swisscom´s WAP portal will get off to a flying start by offering a "first" in the leisure sector: the TicketCorner service is the first true e-commerce application on mobile. A detailed search function allows users not only to search TicketCorner´s entire offering of around 8,500 cultural and sporting events per annum by name, date or venue, but also to order tickets instantly online at the touch of a button. But that is not all the WAP leisure services have to offer. SF DRS provides information on current TV programmes, the cinema guide Cineman has all you need to know about films and cinemas, and the Night-Guide will take you through the Swiss bar and club scene. For the first time, cinema-goers can also take part in the Cineprix vote by mobile phone, and choose their favourite films online.

The world of finance is another key area for WAP services. In addition to constantly updated news, UBS, Telekurs, Swissquote and Trademan provide exchange rates and share prices on your mobile phone screen. ConSors, the Swiss subsidiary of ConSors Discount-Broker AG., Europe´s largest online stock brokers, also presents financial information. UBS goes one step further with UBSQuote: this service allows users to call up their own personalised share portfolios by mobile phone in any place, at any time. TELEDATA & KISSdirect also provide business information about Swiss companies and people.

SWISS TXT and Swissinfo ensure a comprehensive news offering with news on domestic and international politics, business, sport and culture as well as constantly-updated weather information. For those with the travel bug, SBB Online is putting its timetable onto NATEL. offers an overview of the best accommodation. While Schweiz Tourismus provides tourist information on the whole of Switzerland, winter sport tourists planning to visit the Grüsch-Danusa region can keep themselves informed of the conditions on piste and waiting times at the lifts from the comfort of their own homes. In the shopping guide section, Migros will keep you informed of its latest special offers. And if you are travelling and need a telephone number, you´ll find it in Swisscom´s electronic telephone directory.

With WAP, travellers no longer need to do without their e-mail: they can call up their electronic messages on their mobiles. For example, Swisscom´s WAP platform provides NATEL users with access to the popular ´´ and ´´ e-mail accounts, plus other popular mail systems right from the very beginning. A search engine makes it easier to find your way around the big wide world of WAP, and allows easy use of overseas providers´ WAP services.
Swisscom is basing its WAP services and prices consistently on the Internet right from the word go. The aim is to allow as many users as possible access to the new services. Swisscom´s platform will be open to all mobile phone users regardless of their telecom provider. At the same time, call charges remain low, as is customary for the Internet. Swisscom´s NATEL subscribers will pay only CHF 0.20 a minute, and NATEL-easy customers can access the WAP platform for CHF 0.40 a minute.

Swisscom is to expand its WAP services continuously over the next few months, constantly adding new services. The next step will be the opening in April of a special WAP portal on the Internet. Not only can WAPNATEL users obtain information about current WAP-related developments, offers and services via the portal; they can also use it to optimise the use of their mobiles. The WAP services you require can be personalised quickly and easily from your PC via the WAP portal.
