Swisscom focuses on growth and calls for more room for manoeuvre

Today, Swisscom rolled out its business-to-business portal. This electronic platform offers buyers and sellers fast, secure transactions on the Internet. Swisscom and Swiss Post announced that they intend to enter a strategic alliance in the business-to-business sector. Swisscom has already teamed up with Andersen Consulting and PriceWaterhouseCoopers as consultants and implementation partners. Commerce One Inc. - the leading provider of solutions for business-to-business electronic commerce - was taken on as the technology partner of choice last December.

After little more than two month´s preparatory work, Swisscom now has a pilot operation for the electronic marketplace up and running. The first online transactions have already gone through. The platform is based on a product by Commerce One and is operated by Swisscom. It will provide purchasers and suppliers with secure, fast transactions on the Internet. At the same time, it provides a framework where all parties can structure their business-to-business proc-esses simply, cheaply - and fast.

The platform is part of the Global Trading Web developed by Commerce One. This trading Web provides purchasers and suppliers with global access to other electronic marketplaces. The first phase will see Swisscom providing solutions that meet the online procurement requirements of major companies and their suppliers. A second phase will target the Swisscom Electronic Mar-ketplace in specific sectors and extend the system to small and medium-sized enterprises (SME). The range of services offered to the SME segment will be delivered by partnerships and joint ventures through sector-specific electronic marketplaces. Negotiations are already underway with potential partners.

Set-up in business-to-business sector

Swisscom is teaming up with strategic partners in a bid to take the number 1 position in electronic business-to-business marketplaces in Switzerland. The company has also set its sights on being ranked among the big players in neighbouring countries. Subsidiaries will be the main vehicle for extending the Swisscom Electronic Marketplace to these countries.

Strategic alliance with Swiss Post

Strategic alliances are a pivotal element in Swisscom´s strategy for gaining a leadership position. An initial coup in this process was the recent signature of a joint declaration of intent with Swiss Post. The cooperation concerns the joint electronic marketplace for SMEs. Swiss Post will also use the purchasing applications to exploit the savings potential. In addition, they are planning to cooperate in developing supplementary services, such as payment transactions and logistics. Combining this muscle will fast-track the set-up for the leading business-to-business market-place.

Initial success for transactions with Waser B?ter AG The first online transactions on the electronic marketplace between Swisscom as the purchaser and Waser B?ter AG as the pilot supplier chalked up a resounding success. Waser B?nter AG has a product catalogue with 8000 items and this is now available in the marketplace to Swisscom and new purchasers. The pilot operation will run until the end of the summer period.

Other suppliers have already registered on the Swisscom Electronic Marketplace Portal and further link-ups to the marketplace will be added over the coming months.

Andersen Consulting and PriceWaterhouseCoopers as partners

Two world leaders in the consultancy business - Andersen Consulting and PriceWaterhouse-Coopers - have come on board as our startup partners in professional services. This cooperation will allow Swisscom to offer comprehensive services and integration options to marketplace users when they implement their solutions. Andersen Consulting is already providing Swisscom with support in setting up the marketplace platform.

Other strategic partnerships are planned: with major purchasing organizations, for value-added services such as financial services, with leading players in specific sectors, and with additional tech-nology partners.
