Swisscom will hive off the globally successful SICAP system unit on 1 October 2000 so as to increase its effectiveness in the international growth market of mobile communications and pave the way for strategic partnerships. Swisscom will retain a majority holding in the subsidiary company. At present, SICAP is used mainly for prepaid applications, such as Natel easy in Switzerland.
The biggest Internet provider by a long shot continues to enjoy a boom: In the first five months of this year, Blue Window increased the number of access customers from 323,000 to 500,000. Swisscom´s Internet service provider had already doubled its customer base by 1999. Blue Window was hived off on 1 May, and preparations are underway for an IPO, possibly in the second half of 2000.
For over three years now, Blue Window has been offering a comprehensive Internet service for residential and SOHO customers. In the rapidly growing online market, Blue Window has positioned itself as an intermediary between consumer requirements and company offers. Blue Window offers comprehensive information and content on various topics, such as music, cinema, games and travel via its Internet portal. In addition to providing its own content, Blue Window is constantly increasing value added for its customers through cooperation with professional partners. BlueMail enables electronic post to be transmitted and received via the Blue Window portal from any Internet access.
Over the last year, Blue Window customers have spent a total of 30.3 million hours surfing the Net. Blue Window currently registers around 60 million pageviews a month and is therefore clearly Switzerland´s number one Internet provider. Blue Window currently employs a staff of 230.
