Swisscom to outsource project planning, construction and maintenance of the fixed network
18 October 2000
Swisscom already announced earlier this year that it would be outsourcing 3000 jobs and converting from a corporate group into a holding company, which would involve a gradual hiving off of the individual business areas. Within the framework of this systematic transformation, Swisscom plans to outsource the project planning, construction and maintenance of the telecom fixed network and its 900 jobs, and is currently holding talks with interested parties. The network itself and associated network data will remain the sole property of Swisscom.
As part of the process of converting into a holding company, Swisscom will systematically concentrate on its core competencies; and project planning, construction and maintenance of the fixed network do not belong to the core business of Switzerland´s leading telecom company. The planned outsourcing will enable Swisscom to concentrate on planning, steering and managing the network, and will also reduce costs. Outsourcing project planning, construction and maintenance will also significantly increase the market opportunities for this area, as it will now be possible to offer these services to other telecommunications companies and public institutions such as federal, cantonal and local government.
