Swisscom welcomes the decision of the Federal Communications Commission (ComCom), to continue with the UMTS auction on the present basis, with a minimum bid of CHF 50 million. Swisscom also regards the decision as positive for the economy as a whole: The funds which will not be required for licence acquisition will be freed for the development of innovative services and rapid construction of the network, thus accelerating the introduction of UMTS services. Switzerland as a business centre will also benefit from this development.
With a total of four UMTS providers, Switzerland is assured of intensive competition. The decision improves the startup conditions, particularly for the new candidate who currently has no GSM licence. This in turn can only be good for competition and hence for customers.
Swisscom aims to invest over one billion francs in constructing a UMTS network in Switzerland to provide additional capacity for new services, particularly in the field of mobile data communications.
