Swisscom purchases 10% debitel shareholding from DaimlerChrysler Services
19 January 2001
In 1999, Swisscom bought 74% of the debitel shares and signed an option agreement on the 10% still owned by DaimlerChrysler Services. This deal is a pure financial transaction which concludes the original option agreement. Swisscom is financing the transaction with available funds.
debitel, Europe´s largest network-independent service provider, is a strategically-important growth engine for Swisscom. debitel grew its customer base in Europe to over eight million last year. In future debitel will concentrate even more on profiling itself as a provider of mobile value-added and data services. To achieve this goal debitel has stepped up cooperation with D2 Vodafone and has secured UMTS access by signing a non-exclusive agreement as an enhanced service provider.
The sale of its remaining shareholding means that DaimlerChrysler Services will no longer have any interest in debitel. Previously debis, the company has been trading as DaimlerChrysler Services since 1 January 2001. This deal indicates a strategic focus on financial and mobile services related to the automotive industry.
