Grapes to acquire 100% of Swisscom S.p.A.

12 June 2001

Swisscom AG announced today the sale of the entire share capital of Swisscom S.p.A., a switch-based telecommunications service provider for business customers in Northern Italy, to Grapes Communications N.V., Holland.
The divestment follows a focusing of Swisscom´s international strategy on the growing mobile and data market. Swisscom will focus its activities in Italy on its carrier wholesale business, Swisscom Carrier Services S.p.A. The staff force of about 50 employees will be taken over by the new owner and the services will be continued by Grapes under a different brand.

Swisscom S.p.A. is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Swisscom AG. Based in Milan, it offers a portfolio of switch-based voice and data/internet services to small- and medium-size enterprises and small office customers primarily in the Northern Italy regions. Swisscom Carrier Services S.p.A. is a strongly growing member of Swisscom´s wholesale group. It provides premium grade managed bandwidth and voice connectivity services to carriers and service providers using Swisscom´s own European network, EOSNET, the extensive bilateral and traditional transit network.

Grapes Communications N.V. is the holding company of the Grapes group, active as an infrastructure based alternative telecom operator in Italy, Spain and Greece. Grapes is in the process of restructuring its operations to focus on the developments of its Italian activities.
