Swisscom acquires Metro's 10% holding in debitel

12 July 2001

In 1999 Swisscom bought a majority share in debitel and negotiated a shareholder voting agreement and an option on the 10% still owned by MVVKG. This is therefore a purely financial transaction which sees the fulfilment of the original option agreement. Swisscom is making the payment using existing funds.

The fact that the option has been realised will not affect the close cooperation between Metro-Vertriebslinien and debitel in any way. debitel has agreed long-term contracts with all its marketing partners. Dr. Hans-Dieter Cleven, Metro Holding AG, will remain a member of the Board of Directors at debitel AG.
debitel, the largest network-independent service provider in Europe is strategically important for Swisscom. By the end of March debitel´s European customer base totalled 9.3 million. debitel already brings in approx. one third of the revenues of the Swisscom group. The company aims to focus even more strongly on mobile value added and data services in the future. Its long-standing collaboration with D1, D2 Vodafone and E-Plus now also includes UMTS.

debitel AG, whose headquarters is in Stuttgart, is one of Europe´s largest telephone companies. debitel currently manages more than 9.3 million mobile, fixed and Internet customers in Europe. In 2000 debitel achieved revenues of CHF Mio. 3 993. debitel AG has been listed on the stock exchange since the end of March 1999. Peter Wagner is the company´s CEO. debitel is one of the leading providers of convergence products made up of mobile communication/fixed network and Internet solutions. It operates in Denmark, France, the Netherlands and Slovenia and has over 7000 sales outlets in Europe.
