Swisscom Mobile sets up first UMTS calls in Switzerland
10 December 2001
The connections were set up despite the fact that the UMTS terminals used had only just been received. Voice quality was excellent.
Swisscom Mobile´s UMTS pilot network currently comprises eight base stations in Bern and serves to carry out technical tests on the new technology. Plans have been made for further base stations and these will also be set up in collaboration with Ericsson, the supplier of the network.
On the basis of current planning Swisscom Mobile will be able to provide coverage for 20% of the population by the end of 2002 as stipulated in the licence by means of a "stand alone infrastructure". Customers will be able to use UMTS provided terminals are available on the market by then.
