Orbit/Comdex 2002 : Swisscom Mobile to present Public Wireless LAN
29 August 2002
At the Orbit/Comdex Europe exhibition to be held in Basle from 24 to 27 September 2002, Swisscom will be presenting its broad range of services for mobile and wired telecommunications (in Hall1.1, Stand B10). Highlights of the offerings include broadband Internet over ADSL, the mobile office and Public Wireless LAN, which visitors can try out live for the first time.
New SME offerings from Swisscom Fixnet
Swisscom Fixnet offers SMEs versatile, market-oriented telecommunications tailored to their specific requirements. The comprehensive range covers fixed network accesses (analog and ISDN) including ADLS, Internet and hosting, latest-generation terminal equipment, communications systems for voice and data services, business numbers and data communications. The Top C503 ISDN mini PBX is a versatile communications system for the small office/home office, featuring four channels and the most important ISDN functions. Up to four analog telephones, a PC and a fax machine can be connected. With over 100,000 accesses in the Swiss market, ADSL is becoming increasingly popular among SMEs. At Orbit, Swisscom Fixnet Wholesale Services will be launching a new business offering in addition to the existing ADSL offerings for residential customers. The new offering will deliver bandwidths between 512 kbit/s and 2 Mbit/s and be available at the end of 2002.
Mobile office and lower GPRS prices for business customers from Swisscom Mobile
Corporate Office Access allows companies to provide their mobile employees with permanent access to the company LAN and thus to e-mails, appointments calendars, tasks and contacts. They can even use WAP-compatible mobile phones as well as pocket PCs. There is also a special GPRS product variant that enables secure end-to-end connectivity (VPN) from a mobile laptop to the corporate network. Since Swisscom Mobile also offers Corporate Office Access as a middleware platform at the customer end at no extra investment cost, it is also suitable for use by SMEs. In the mobile office, the choice of transmission technology plays a secondary role. GSM, HSCSD and GPRS as well as Public Wireless LAN and eventually UMTS may be selected depending on the application area. GPRS customers benefit from an attractive new price model for frequent users which offers the option of selecting a GPRS tariff tailored to their usage. For example, with the new GPRS prices for business customers it is possible to transmit one megabyte of data for less than CHF 4.00. At Orbit Swisscom Mobile will be presenting its Public Wireless LAN product live for the first time. Visitors to Orbit can test the performance of Public Wireless LAN for themselves - all they need is a notebook with WLAN card. At the Swisscom Mobile "hotspot" Public Wireless LAN offers business customers broadband access to the Internet, e-mails and corporate network from their laptop or pocket PC. Public Wireless LAN is to be marketed in the course of this year, and around 100 hotspots are to be set up in the near future (e.g. in hotels, congress centres, at airports and railway stations). The product specifications include fast transmission speeds (up to 2 Mbit/s) and secure access to corporate networks via a Virtual Private Network (VPN). Authentication and charging is via the existing NATEL number or ValueCard. From 10.30 to 11.30 on Tuesday, 24 September 2002, a Public Wireless LAN media workshop will be held at which journalists can try out the hardware and software for themselves (Congress Centre, Messeplatz 21, "Bern" Room).
