Swisscom has been successfully involved in sports sponsoring for several years as partner of Swiss Ski and main sponsor of the alpine and Nordic national teams. Swisscom has committed itself to the promotion of both elite and popular sport as well as young sporting talent. Swisscom will be continuing to pursue this target as sponsor of the Swiss Football Association and the national football teams.
Swisscom is supporting the Swiss national football teams as co-sponsor, including the national A team, the women's national team, the national teams of the under 16s to under 21 selections, the under 19 women's national team and the regional under 13 and under 14 selection teams.
There are good reasons in favour of this sponsorship activity: thanks to FC Basel's incredible performance in the Champion's League and the success of the under 17 and under 21 national teams on the international stage, Swiss football is currently enjoying an unprecedented wave of popularity. And the hosting of the 2008 European Cup and the new stadiums being built in Bern, Basel and Geneva are set to further boost football's popularity here at home. "Football arouses emotions and enthusiasm and provides enjoyment for a great many people," explained Stefan Nünlist, Head of Corporate Communications at Swisscom, at a press conference on Tuesday in Geneva. "Alongside ski sports in the winter, football is one of the most popular sports there are. And football is also an ideal sponsorship activity for Swisscom since it fits in optimally with our business." Swisscom Fixnet announced back in the autumn of 2002 that it would be becoming title sponsor of the Swiss football cup from the 2003/2004 season.
Swisscom will be making its debut as sponsor on 30 April 2003 at the match between Switzerland and Italy at the Stade de Genève.
Swisscom intends to remain sponsor of the Swiss Football Association and the Swiss national football teams until the end of June 2008 at the earliest. An initial contract runs provisionally until June 2004 with the option of being extended.
Swisscom is looking forward to cooperating with the Swiss Football Association and its partners to ensure a successful future for Swiss football.
