Zurich airport to become a Swisscom Mobile Public Wireless LAN Hotspot
30 June 2003
It is particularly important for business people to be able to make productive use of time spent waiting and travelling. Public Wireless LAN provides the user with access to the Internet, e-mail, appointments, diary and - as long as this is installed - to company data. The opening of the Hotspot at Zurich airport will now mean that flight passengers can also have wireless high-speed Internet access. The airport will be one of over 190 Swisscom Mobile Hotspot partners to date throughout Switzerland.
Zurich airport is Switzerland?s largest international airport. Around 18 million passengers and 421'811 tons of cargo are transported on 282'154 flights each year. 63 airlines and 48 charter carriers fly to 143 destinations in 68 countries. Thanks to collaboration between Unique (Flughafen Zürich AG) and Swisscom Mobile, Public Wireless LAN will enable business people operating internationally to have easy mobile access to their data shortly before or after their flight.
Public Wireless LAN is easy to use: By starting their laptop and Internet browser, users arrive directly at the Swisscom Mobile homepage. Public Wireless LAN can be used as a supplementary service to a NATEL® subscription. Registration takes place online free of charge on first use. If the service is subscribed to then billing takes place conveniently via the user's NATEL® bill. Otherwise a Value Card is required. This can be purchased at the Hotspot and used straight away. With a transmission rate of up to 2 Mbit/s, a connection to the Internet via Public Wireless LAN is almost forty times faster than via ISDN from a desktop PC.
