Swisscom renews its "Internet for Schools" sponsorship - 2'000 schools have already benefited
16 June 2003
By renewing its sponsorship contracts, Swisscom is sending out a clear signal in favour of the initiative and underlining its commitment to the "Public Private Partnership - Internet for Schools" educational initiative: Only long-term cooperation between the private and public sectors spanning several years can ensure active sustained promotion of "internetability" among Swiss young people.
2'000 schools already linked - over half a million pupils are benefiting
Swisscom's "Internet for Schools" initiative is making a major contribution to the technological upgrading of Swiss schools and the promotion of our country's most important resource - education. Once the programme is completed, Swisscom's sponsorship commitment will amount to around CHF 50 million each year (market value of sponsored services). The goal of the initiative is for all Swiss schools to be connected to the Internet by 2006. The 2'000th school to be connected was the primary school in Nussbaumen, Canton of Thurgau.
The success factors are impressive: Around 28'000 school classes across the country are currently benefiting from the educational initiative. Over half a million schoolchildren can now be taught on around 60'000 computers via a Swisscom-sponsored broadband Internet access.
