Swisscom and Microsoft Cooperate on Enterprise Mobile Data Solutions

12 October 2003

BERNE, GENEVA and REDMOND, Wash. Oct. 12, 2003 - Today, Swisscom AG (NYSE "SCM", SWX "SCMN") and Microsoft Corp. (Nasdaq "MSFT") announced a cooperation on bringing enterprise mobile data solutions to market that combine the power of Windows and the .NET platform with the convenience and reliability of wireless broadband services from Swisscom Eurospot and Swisscom Mobile.

Starting with today's demonstration of the new Wireless Provisioning Services (WPS), an enhancement to the wireless networking service in Windows XP, the companies will cooperate on a series of communications services that enable enterprise applications such as Microsoft Exchange 2003 to fully leverage the capabilities of Windows notebooks and TabletPCs as well as Windows Mobile devices with the .NET Compact Framework - Smartphone and Pocket PC. Microsoft's .NET framework, fully integrated in Windows 2003 Server, will allow for the support of over 200 current mobile phones and various PDAs without the need for device-specific programming.

Building on the .NET application server and development platform, Swisscom today introduced its "HotSpot Locator", an application that quickly finds the nearest Swisscom public wireless LAN hotspot and displays its location using the MapPoint Web Service. HotSpot Locator was built by Swisscom Mobile and Microsoft Consulting Services using the .NET framework and therefore not only supports any Windows or Windows Mobile device, but also WAP phones and PDAs.

Public wireless LAN (PWLAN or Wi-Fi) hotspots are a key growth area in wireless broadband networking. Wireless provisioning services (WPS) are used to seamlessly detect, sign up and get provisioned to wireless networks in different locations with high security ? the typical need of nomadic professionals. WPS, together with the Windows Server 2003 Platform, that includes Microsoft IAS (a RADIUS server), also allow users to conveniently discover, connect and roam between both public and private wireless hotspots in various venues such as hotels, airports, convention and office buildings. Swisscom has been selected by Microsoft as the prime launch partner for WPS in Europe.

"Pan-European public wireless LAN (or Wi-Fi) hotspot services are a focused investment at Swisscom through Swisscom Eurospot internationally and Swisscom Mobile domestically," explains Jens Alder, CEO of Swisscom AG. "Our collaboration with Microsoft will allow Swisscom to be the first operator in Europe to enable easy-to-use and highly secure public Wi-Fi access services with Windows XP. Together, Swisscom and Microsoft will help mobile professionals to work efficiently and conveniently without compromising security.

"Alexander Stüger, General Manager of Microsoft Switzerland, responds that "Microsoft is pleased to count on the know-how and experience of Swisscom Mobile and Swisscom Eurospot in our efforts to bring easy-to-use and secure "anytime, anywhere" access to business critical data for the mobile professional. Together, Swisscom and Microsoft will promote mobile data solutions and cooperate to extend Switzerland's leading role in mobile communications."
