Orbit/iEX 2005: mobile data communication and DSL for SMEs

13 May 2005

From 24-27 May 2005, Swisscom will be presenting forward-looking services at the Orbit/iEX trade fair in Basel. In particular, Switzerland's leadings telecommunications company will be promoting mobile data communication, security, outsourcing and DSL for SMEs. Swisscom Directories will also be launching a new application for synchronising address data.

Swisscom Mobile will focus on mobile data communication at the trade fair, presenting Mobile Unlimited. This product picked up a GSM Association (GSMA) award in Cannes in February 2005 as the world's best mobile business customer solution. The GSMA is the global association of mobile telecommunication operators. Mobile Unlimited from Swisscom Mobile has been available exclusively in Switzerland since September 2004 and provides users on the move with high-speed, uninterrupted access to the Internet and company data at all times. The key features of the product are the unlimited PC card (which supports GPRS, UMTS and WLAN) and a seamless handover solution developed by Swisscom Mobile. Mobile Unlimited makes mobile data communication as simple and fast as from a fixed workstation with broadband access.

Thanks to the flat fee of just CHF 79 per month for up to 1 GB of mobile data traffic introduced in May 2005, mobile surfing and mobile remote access to company data with Mobile Unlimited are now more attractive than ever. From July, the range of Mobile Unlimited hardware will be further expanded with the launch of an EDGE-capable data card. Visitors to the trade fair will also have the opportunity to find out about other attractive mobile data solutions, for instance BlackBerry or Mobile Assistant (Qtek 9090, Qtek S100, Motorola MPx 220), and will of course gain an overview of the entire range of devices and solutions available to business customers.

Telephony is also of interest to SMEs, for example the attractive Mobile Business Group communication solution developed especially for small and medium-sized enterprises. Mobile Business Group allows staff to make internal calls on their mobile phones for just CHF 0.10/minute. The offer includes 100 minutes of free talk-time per employee per month.

Swisscom Fixnet will use the Orbit trade fair to present its latest telecommunications solutions aimed specifically at small and medium-sized enterprises. These include solutions for providing secure, reliable Internet access, for combining a number of local networks into a single corporate network and for networking the workstations of mobile employees.

DSL Professional is Swisscom Fixnet's new Internet access service tailored to the specific needs of SMEs with regard to online data security and availability. A centrally managed firewall that can be adapted to individual security requirements offers optimal protection, while a free ISDN backup line guarantees data availability even if the broadband connection fails.

In business, smooth information flows and data exchange can be the difference between success and failure. That's why branch offices and employees in the field need round-the-clock access to up-to-date company data. Swisscom Fixnet's VPN Professional solution enables SMEs in particular to network offices, combine a number of local networks into a single corporate network and set up centralised services such as order processing and bookkeeping. Mobile staff can also access data remotely from home or while on the move.

Bluewin Phone from Swisscom Fixnet combines telephony with all the advantages of a broadband connection, and is a testament to Swisscom Fixnet's focus on quality and reliable availability. Other important additional features include global availability under a single number, conference calling and video telephony, comprehensive call information and call forwarding.

Swisscom Solutions, the leading independent provider of business communication services, will be present at Orbit/iEX together with Celeris AG and will be focusing on issues such as managed security services, digital certification and trust centre services. At a seminar on 24 May, Swisscom Solutions will be discussing when companies should consider outsourcing their IT infrastructure and what the underlying conditions need to be.

Swisscom Directories will be focusing on personal address books. In addition to Internet-based directories such as the Yellow and White Pages, phone book CDs such as telinfo and Directories CD, the company will be presenting Directories ETV, an up-to-the-minute online directory. New power tools mean that with ETV, synchronising addresses - e.g. in Microsoft Outlook - is easy. The days of copy-pasting addresses are long gone. A free software application turns Outlook into an online telephone book. Even mobile numbers can be synchronised using the personal Directories ETV address book. The personal address book updates itself, ensuring that you always have the latest information, because all ETV-linked addresses in the address book are updated automatically whenever they are changed.
