Press release

Billag AG to concentrate on public sector business - Accarda AG to take over private sector domain

29 June 2005

Billag AG will in future be concentrating on providing billing services to public sector authorities, currently comprising the billing of radio and television license fees for the financing of public service broadcasting. All other services that until now have been provided by Billag Card Services within the private sector domain are to be incorporated into a new company, Accarda AG. In addition to customer cards, Accarda AG also intends to expand into new business areas and will be taking over Medipa AG, which operates in the field of medical billing.

The newly founded Accarda AG, which is fully owned by Swisscom Ltd, is based in Brüttisellen, the present headquarters of Billag Card Services. With some 225 employees, Accarda is Switzerland's leading provider of customer card services. These activities are to be expanded in Switzerland and Europe and supplemented by additional marketing and financial services covering the entire billing spectrum. From 1 July Accarda will also be taking over legal payment collection for all Swisscom Group companies, making it the number two in legal billing services in Switzerland.

Venture into healthcare with Medipa

Accarda is now branching out and offering billing services to healthcare providers. On 1 July 2005 it will be taking over Medipa AG in Pfäffikon (SZ), which - with 30 employees - is Switzerland's number two in the medical billing sector. The strengths of Accarda and Medipa are their market independence and financial power. The parties have agreed not to disclose details of the purchase price for Medipa.

Billag to focus on public sector billing

Billag AG in Fribourg will now become a legal and operationally independent subsidiary of Accarda. With its staff of around 160, it will concentrate on the provision of billing services for public sector authorities. Since 1998 it has carried out payment collection on behalf of the Swiss Federal Government, thereby enabling the financing of public service broadcasting for radio and television. Billag is currently tendering a bid against its competitors to win the renewal of this mandate for another seven years.

The management of Accarda and Billag lies in the hands of Jürg Rötheli, who is a member of Swisscom Group Management and head of Related Businesses.
