Swisscom Mobile is continuously expanding its Mobile Unlimited range of services. Effective immediately, a second Unlimited PC Card is now available which supports the EDGE, GPRS and WLAN transmission technologies, thereby enabling Swiss-wide mobile broadband access to the Internet and company data for the first time ever.
To date, Swisscom Mobile has sold over 15,000 of the first series of Unlimited PC Cards (for UMTS, GPRS and WLAN), which is in line with expectations. This card is suitable for users who move around a lot in urban areas and wish to take advantage of the fast transmission speeds offered by UMTS (up to 384 Kbit/s) or WLAN at Hotspots (in the range of 2 MBit/s). In addition, nationwide online access is offered via GPRS at speeds of up to 50 Kbit/s.
The second Unlimited PC Card is now also available and supports EDGE, GPRS and WLAN, thereby enabling nationwide broadband data communication throughout Switzerland at speeds of over 200 Kbit/s. EDGE (Enhanced Data Rates for GSM Evolution) is based on the GSM network. The widespread availability (99.8% of the population) of EDGE is a decisive advantage for all business and residential customers who also want to have fast access to data services outside urban areas or in buildings without UMTS.
The EDGE-enabled Unlimited PC Card supports the GSM frequency ranges 800/ 900/ 1800/ 1900 MHz and therefore also works in the USA. It is plugged into the PCMCIA slot of the user's laptop, and thanks to its small dimensions can be fully inserted inside the slot at all times. Its system requirements comprise the Windows 2000 or Windows XP operating systems. In combination with Data Option 1000 (flat rate of CHF 79 per month for up to 1 GB), both Unlimited PC Cards cost CHF 1 with a minimum contract term of 24 months and CHF 99 with a minimum contract term of 12 months.
