Press release

Efforts to clear up flood damage continue

26 August 2005

The situation concerning the fixed network of Swisscom Fixnet remains stable. While transmission has been restored in the inter-exchange network thanks to a range of further alternative circuits, the exchanges in Oey, Latterbach, Boenigen and Wilderswil in the Bernese Oberland will remain down until further notice.

In Central Switzerland, the exchanges in Grundhof (Emmenbrücke, Canton of Lucerne), Melchtal (Canton of Obwalden), Melchsee-Frutt (Canton of Obwalden), Unterschächen (Canton of Uri) and Rynacht (near Schattdorf, Canton of Uri) will continue to be out of operation for an unspecified time.

The exchange in Bristen (Canton of Uri) is expected to be operational again by Sunday evening. In the affected areas, some 3,500 telephone and 5,000 broadband (ADSL) connections are still out of operation.

The access network that connects the exchanges and the households show widely varying degrees of damage,  with many cable ducts and lines still under water. This may take days if not weeks to clear. Our specialists are working round the clock and will also be working over the weekend. Swisscom Mobile network coverage was resumed on Thursday.
