Broadband Internet boom still going strong: one million ADSL connections in operation

29 August 2005

The number of ADSL connections in Switzerland has broken through the one million barrier within just a few years - and demand shows no sign of slowing. Thanks to large investments in the Swisscom infrastructure, ADSL is available practically all over Switzerland, making an important contribution to the Swiss IT landscape.

The market for high-speed broadband Internet access with ADSL continues to go from strength from strength. Within the space of two years, the number of ADSL connections in Switzerland has doubled. At the end of 2001, there were 33,000 customers surfing the Internet with ADSL; now there are more than 30 times this amount. Recently Swisscom Fixnet Wholesale activated its landmark one millionth ADSL connection on behalf of a reseller.

Thanks to strong investment in all parts of the country including outlying regions, ADSL is available on over 98% of Switzerland's approximately four million fixed network connections - a higher percentage than any other country. Switzerland leads the rest of the world in terms of ADSL broadband Internet usage and has a vital role to play in shaping the Swiss IT landscape. ADSL is also used by more than 10,000 companies, so it represents an important contribution to the national economy.

Swisscom Fixnet Wholesale offers ADSL technology in Switzerland via a network of around 30 Internet providers, and supports the sales efforts made by its distribution partners with attractive offers for end customers.
