After the flooding: further exchanges up and running

01 September 2005

The network exchanges in Melchtal and Melchsee-Frutt in Central Switzerland are up and running again, as well as the ADSL lines in and around Entlebuch and Willisau. Repairs to the Rynacht/Schattdorf exchange are making good progress. The fixed-lines in Oey, Bönigen and Wilderswil are still down. Across the whole areas affected by the flooding, some 2,300 voice and 2,200 ADSL lines are still out of operation.

Access lines between the end customers and the exchanges will remain out of operation until further notice in pats of the Bernese Oberland, the Matte quarter in Berne and in parts of Central and Eastern Switzerland. The cause is attributable to household connections, ducts and cables that are either waterlogged or buried under mud and rubble. For further information on how long the disruptions will continue, if this is known, customers can call the free Swisscom Fault Reporting Service on 175.

The mobile telephone container in Oey in the Bernese Oberland is expected to go into operation on 16 September. This will provide a provisional replacement for the totally damaged exchange in Oey.

The damage to the exchanges in Bönigen and Wilderswil is now expected to be repaired by September 16. Repair work continues on the exchange in Rynacht/Schattdorf (Canton of Uri). Here it is not yet known when operation will be restored.
