Swisscom founds new company in the field of RFID services

05 October 2005

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology enables the high-speed automatic recording of data using radio waves. In a move aimed at offering this machine-to-machine (M2M) communications technology, Swisscom has founded a new company, Swisscom Auto-ID Services AG. Christian Müller, until now with Swisscom Solutions, has been appointed CEO of the new company. Swisscom Auto-ID Services AG will focus initially on offering services in the logistics and retail sectors.

Swisscom Auto-ID Services AG is looking above all to make a breakthrough with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology in the logistics services area, where it will be used to enable high-speed automatic data recording using radio waves. RFID is able to identify all manner of objects without direct contact, and offers a whole range of practical applications in the field of supply chain management (logistics, inventory management, industrial automation, services and identification). It will serve as a replacement for barcode readers and optical object recognition and will help speed up supply management operations for the customer.

Swisscom Auto-ID Services will focus initially on developing the market with a small team and will be engaged primarily in consulting, planning and in the implementation of integrated solutions. Christian Müller, a 36-year-old computer science graduate (lic. oec. inform.) from the University of St Gallen and until now with Swisscom Solutions, has been appointed CEO of the new company. He brings with him over ten years' management experience in the telecoms, IT and consulting fields, including at executive board level at Swisscom Systems, Arthur D. Little and Online Consulting.
