Swisscom Solutions provides the Swiss Post with IP telephony

14 November 2005

Swisscom Solutions AG is updating the Swiss Post's telephone system: over the next five years, traditional telephone equipment will be replaced by IP phone systems. Swiss Post employees will then be able to make calls over the data network. The order volume will be around CHF 12 million a year.

The traditional Swiss Post telephone system has 26,000 telephones distributed across 2,500 locations across Switzerland, and is thus highly complex and decentralised. Over the next five years, Swisscom Solutions will oversee the entire changeover process from conventional phone systems to IP telephony, and will supervise the technological upgrades at Swiss Post. Thanks to improved compatibility with other systems, the switch will result in easier operation, lower costs, simplified financial planning and an optimum price/performance ratio.

IP telephony means making telephone calls via a computer network based on the Internet protocol. Data and voice traffic are transmitted via the same network.

This new and innovative partnership model is based on many years of cooperation. Both Swisscom Solutions and Swiss Post will be contributing their know-how to the project in order to achieve the greatest possible common benefit and to put an open platform in operation for Swiss Post.
