2006 Football World Cup: Swisscom Mobile acquires mobile communication rights

10 February 2006

Swisscom Mobile has acquired the exclusive Swiss mobile broadcasting rights for the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. The licence was awarded by Infront Sports & Media AG, FIFA's exclusive global TV partner and the owner of all audiovisual exploitation rights for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. The rights package includes transmission of match summaries and highlights, a special replay TV channel and exclusive image rights for MMS and Vodafone live! services.

The FIFA World Cup kicks off in Munich on 9 June 2006. As Switzerland's official mobile video broadcaster, Swisscom Mobile will be there to offer exclusive content on all 64 World Cup matches on Vodafone live!. Services will include a full range of video clips featuring match highlights (goals, penalties, red cards) as well as daily updates.

The video clips, which will last between 15 seconds (goal alerts) and four minutes (summaries or highlights), will be available on subscription or via individual download. Summaries of the latest matches will be broadcast on Swisscom Mobile's own replay TV channel on Vodafone live!. Swisscom Mobile will also be offering various World Cup MMS and SMS services.

Needless to say, all the matches will also be available on Live TV with commentary in German, French and Italian.

Replay and Live TV as well as most of the video clips will be available exclusively via EDGE or UMTS-enabled mobiles.

The contract with Infront Sports & Media also gives Swisscom Mobile the right to offer archive content on the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Various such content offerings will be available on Vodafone live! from spring 2006. A special World Cup product package will also be on sale in all Swisscom Shops from the same time.
