Swisscom will remain the main sponsor of the national squads and all Swiss Ski teams in the alpine and Nordic events as well as for snowboarding, freestyle and telemark skiing until 2010. The extension of the agreement was announced by Stefan Nünlist, Head of Swisscom Group Communications, in Berne on Monday evening at a celebration in honour of the medal and certificate winners at the recent Winter Olympics. The event was the partners' way of thanking the successful sportsmen and -women for their tremendous efforts in Turin.
Swisscom's involvement with Swiss Ski reflects its commitment to winter sports in Switzerland. "Snow and winter sports are important factors for our economy and a part of our identity. They are as synonymous with Switzerland as mountains, lakes and Swisscom. Our company has a close bond with Switzerland's major winter sports and is convinced that our athletes have great potential," says Stefan Nünlist. Swisscom considers the extension of its partnership with Swiss Ski as a contribution towards helping the athletes and coaches gain the necessary stability for achieving world-beating performances. The Swisscom bonus for the Association adds a new, performance-related dimension to traditional sponsorship, and is designed to help Switzerland establish itself as the world's Number One skiing nation once again. The bonus will be awarded when Swiss Ski finishes in the top-three alpine nation rankings. The first place will be rewarded with CHF 500,000.
Swiss Ski President Duri Bezzola views the extension as a demonstration of trust. "Swisscom knows our Federation very well and is prepared to continue walking down a common path with us," he says. "That gives our athletes, coaches and staff extra motivation."
Swisscom first became the main sponsor of Swiss Ski's Nordic teams and co-sponsor of the Federation's alpine disciplines in 2001. A year later, the company took over the main sponsorship of the alpine sports. It has been the main sponsor of all eight disciplines since 2005.
