Billag to collect radio and TV license fees for a further seven years

11 April 2006

Good news for Billag: DETEC has awarded the company the mandate to collect radio and TV license fees from 2008 to 2014. The decision also secures the jobs of the company's staff. Billag employs 260 people, around 160 of whom are based in Fribourg.

The Federal Department of the Environment, Transport, Energy and Communications (DETEC) has decided to award the mandate to collect radio and TV license fees to Fribourg-based Billag AG, a Swisscom Group company, for a further seven years. Billag has therefore emerged successful from the bid process. The company has collected radio and TV license fees on behalf of DETEC with great success since 1998. This has resulted in a continuous improvement in the registration of license fee payers. The level of market penetration is currently 96% for television and 92% for radio. These are extremely impressive figures from an international perspective, too. Thanks to its collection performance, Billag has registered almost all license fee payers and thus helps to ensure that license fees are paid. The company collects in excess of CHF 1.2 billion each year, with twelve million bills issued annually to three million customers.

Billag's Board of Directors, Executive Board and staff were proud and extremely delighted to learn of the decision. The success is recognition for the work we have done to date and also an incentive to further improve the collection process for public-service radio and TV broadcasters
