Swisscom chooses optical transport platform of the future

Berne, 24 November 2008

On 24 November 2008, Swisscom (Switzerland) Ltd and Huawei Technologies Switzerland signed an agreement for the supply of the new optical transport platform as an element of the future all-IP network. This will enable Swisscom to lay the foundations required to meet the increasing demand for greater bandwidths, to introduce new product offers quickly and to migrate the existing systems onto a future-oriented network.

The new platform is of strategic importance for Swisscom as the core element of the future all-IP network. With all-IP, Swisscom is making the technological switch from classic telephony to communication via Internet protocol. When completed, the platform will be available at around 1,000 locations.

After a complex selection process involving well-known companies from Europe and Asia, Huawei was chosen as the technology partner for the optical platform. Huawei Technologies is a specialist provider of products and services in the telecommunications sector. Various European telecommunications providers are already successfully using Huawei technology. During the tender process, the selected supplier proved that it has the necessary capabilities to meet Swisscom's high technical and scheduling demands.

Under the terms of the agreement, Huawei will initially provide a training and testing system as well as training for employees. When these comprehensive tests have been carried out, Swisscom will make a final decision on whether or not to implement the new platform.

All-IP network: An all-IP network provides the user with services like VoIP, (Voice over IP), IPTV (TV via Internet protocol), data transfer, etc. anytime and anywhere. Packet-switched data transmission takes place via the Internet protocol (IP).
