Swisscom and Verizon Business offer jointly managed security solutions

Berne, 07 May 2009

Swisscom now offers a new service for business customers with an international focus: Swisscom is expanding its security services with the addition of Managed Security Services from Verizon Business. This will let customers procure security solutions for Switzerland and the entire world from one source, thus considerably simplifying the management of their operational processes.

The new offer is the latest initiative born of the preferred partnership between Swisscom and Verizon Business which was negotiated in May 2008. This partnership aims to offer a comprehensive, end-to-end range of services, integrated networks, convergent services and seamless processes throughout the globe to international business customers with branch offices in Switzerland. With the addition of Verizon's Managed Security Services, Swisscom now has global coverage and also offers services in the areas of perimeter, network and application security to fend off hacker attacks and prevent data loss.

Swisscom's security team will make use of Verizon Business's security expertise and their extensive global coverage in order to develop and implement tailor-made security solutions. Their focus is on the needs of corporate business and their employees, customers, suppliers and partners who are mobile or based in different locations. Integration in the customer's overall communication solution also enable general improvements in cost management.

Security issues are of central importance to companies around the world. The 2009 Verizon Business Data Breach Investigations Report showed that nearly 9 out of 10 data breaches were avoidable if security basics had been followed. The report concluded that most breaches did not require difficult or expensive controls, indeed, mistakes and oversight failures hindered security efforts more than a lack of resources at the time of the breach. The study gives guidance on how businesses could work to effectively secure their data, and reflects Verizon Business' leadership and expertise in every aspect of managed security services.

According to Roland Staubli, Head of International Partnerships and Outsourcing at Swisscom Corporate Business, "Some companies still lack an integrated security plan for their general infrastructure. By combining the security expertise of Swisscom and Verizon Business, our customers now have the option of outsourcing their security infrastructure to a trustworthy partner with both experience as well as a vast portfolio which enable it to offer protection against security breaches."

David Howorth, Regional Vice President Global Services EMEA, Verizon Business, adds: "The Verizon Business Team has extensive knowledge of and experience in the provision of efficient, fully integrated communication and security solutions, thus complementing Swisscom's existing security portfolio. This alliance aims to improve the operations of our shared customers. In this effort, we remain committed to expanding our range of products and services so that we can continue to meet customers' specific needs in the future, as well."

Thanks to the partnership between Swisscom and Verizon Business, Swisscom's international customers will gain seamless access to a comprehensive global network and the solutions offered by the partner company. Those customers of Verizon Business who are active in Switzerland will benefit on their part from Swisscom's infrastructure, longstanding market experience and the company's customer service organisation.

The advantages that this partnership offers customers have already won over a first major Swiss corporation. Initially for a period of three years, Maag Pump Systems from Oberglatt near Zurich will receive a fully-managed network solution from Swisscom including security services. Oberglatt will be networked with branch offices in Italy, France, Germany, the US, Singapore and China as well as the SAP Application Service Provider in Oftringen. Each site has a firewall with remote access, antivirus, anti-spam and deep inspection features which scan the innermost contents of an IP connection's incoming and outgoing data packets for malicious content. These firewalls are managed centrally 24 hours a day.
