Swisscom is the only provider to offer its customers 4G/LTE, Switzerland's fastest, most cutting-edge mobile network. Expansion is progressing at full speed and the new network is now being upgraded once again. Swisscom customers will be able to download their pictures and videos even more quickly and surf the Internet at lightning speed. Swisscom will initially increase the speed in high-traffic locations and expand these on an ongoing basis.
A change is also in store for prepaid customers: Swisscom's 4G/LTE network will also be available automatically to mobile customers without a subscription from the beginning of July. Customers with a prepaid card from Swisscom and a 4G/LTE-compatible device can benefit from the considerably higher capacity, greater speed and shorter reaction times of the 4G/LTE network. In just six months, Swisscom has rolled out 4G/LTE to 170 locations in both rural and urban areas. That represents a population coverage of 50%. Swisscom plans to extend 4G/LTE coverage to 70% of the population by the end of the year.
One in two smartphones sold by Swisscom is already 4G/LTE-compatible, clear evidence of the increasing importance of 4G/LTE for customers. Some 400,000 customers use a compatible smartphone or modem.
By combining GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSPA, HSPA+, 4G/LTE and WLAN, Swisscom offers a blend of mobile broadband Internet technology that is unique in Switzerland and will invest around CHF 1.5 billion in the modernisation of its mobile network by 2017. Swisscom continues to expand its network throughout the whole of Switzerland, ensuring that every customer with every subscription has the best connection possible.
