Swisscom’s data centre in Bern-Wankdorf has been awarded Tier IV Design Certification by the Uptime Institute. This is the first data centre in Switzerland to receive this coveted award and thus meets the highest global standard, with fully redundant subsystems, compartmentalised security zones and biometric access controls.
Swisscom’s data centre in Wankdorf in Berne is the first data centre in Switzerland to be awarded Tier IV Design Certification by the Uptime Institute. A global competence centre for data centre operators, the Uptime Institute defines and certifies four operator classes (Tier Levels I to IV), covering power supply and air-conditioning systems and the corresponding measurement and control technology. The Wankdorf data centre thus ideally meets the high demands of outsourcing customers in terms of efficiency and security. Swisscom developed the certified systems in partnership with the general planner RZintegral AG over a three-year period.
The data centre which Swisscom is currently building in Bern-Wankdorf will be one of the most advanced and efficient data centres in Europe. The building will be cooled using re-circulated air and rain water, waste heat will be fed into the city of Berne’s heating network and an innovative emergency power supply system will make batteries redundant. The new data centre will begin operations in autumn 2014.
