The Board of Directors of Swisscom Ltd have appointed Urs Schaeppi as new CEO with immediate effect. He has been with Swisscom for 15 years, becoming Head of Corporate Business in 2007 and Head of Swisscom Switzerland at the start of 2013. He has been acting CEO since 23 July. “Urs Schaeppi has an in-depth knowledge both of the industry and of Swisscom and boasts an excellent track record,” says Hansueli Loosli, Chairman of the Board of Directors. “He is results-oriented and can ensure the company’s continuity. We are convinced that Urs Schaeppi will lead our company into a successful future.”
Business customers are increasingly looking for efficient, one-stop ICT solutions that will simplify their processes and reduce costs. Technological development and increasing mobility are facilitating new business models and processes and fundamentally changing the requirements of business customers. Conventional telephony is being replaced by IP-based services, for example, while mobile working and cross-company solutions are becoming the standard. At the same time, customers are increasingly demanding powerful, permanently available IT and communications solutions. In the case of cloud-based services in particular, the security and storage of data in Switzerland is becoming an ever more important factor in business customers’ decision-making processes. The use of cloud services also creates synergies through previously unheard of flexibility, permits networking of a diverse range of services and represents a further step in the industrialisation of telecoms and IT processes. The changes present new opportunities for Swisscom to use its expertise in telecommunications, IT and connectivity to develop innovative solutions.
To enable Swisscom to develop one-stop solutions for its corporate customers and generate growth, the company is to adapt its organisational structure. The changes will affect the Corporate Business and Network & IT divisions and Swisscom IT Services. “In future we will serve all corporate customers through the new Enterprise Customers division, which, with more than 4,500 employees, will become one of Switzerland’s largest integrated ICT providers for corporate customers,” says Swisscom CEO Urs Schaeppi. The new Enterprise Customers division will handle the entire sales organisation, customer service and product development for all corporate customers.
The rapid pace of change is opening up numerous opportunities for telecommunications and IT providers like Swisscom to develop new services and hence generate new revenue. More and more companies are already opting not to manage parts of their IT systems such as data centres, data archives and software themselves but instead to outsource them to the cloud of a specialised provider such as Swisscom. “The transformation in the digital world is changing business models and processes in almost all sectors. Cloud computing will therefore be the basis of future IT infrastructures and services, and this trend is set to continue at a rapid rate,” says Andreas König, Head of the Enterprise Customers division.
The integration of Swisscom IT Services into Swisscom Switzerland will result in a simplified Group structure. From 1 January 2014 the Group Executive Board will comprise the following members: Urs Schaeppi (CEO), Marc Werner (Residential Customers), Roger Wüthrich-Hasenböhler (Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises), Andreas König (Enterprise Customers), Heinz Herren (IT, Network & Innovation), Mario Rossi (Group Business Steering) and Hans Werner (Group Human Resources). Stefan Nünlist (Group Communications & Responsibility), Martin Vögeli (Group Strategy & Board Services) and Roger Halbheer (Group Security) will also continue to report directly to the CEO. The deputy CEOs are Heinz Herren for operational business in Switzerland and Mario Rossi for the central Group units and as Vice-Chairman of Fastweb. Fastweb will be managed via the Board of Directors chaired by Swisscom CEO Urs Schaeppi.
