Media usage among young people

JAMES is the Swiss study on media use and leisure behaviour among 12- to 19-year-olds. On behalf of Swisscom, the ZHAW conducts a representative survey every two years. The JAMESfocus study, conducted in the following year, provides more in-depth insights. All results can be found on this page.

JAMES Study 2024

Gaming becoming increasingly popular

While many media activities have seen little or no increase, gaming is becoming increasingly popular. This is shown by the JAMES Study 2024. Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and Snapchat are consolidating their role as the Big Four smartphone apps across all age groups. Boys are significantly more likely to be both perpetrators and victims of cyberbullying, while almost every second girl has been sexually harassed online. AI applications also have a large fan base among young people.

JAMES Study 2022

Girls are trendsetters on social networks

Girls set the trends on widely used social networks. They are quicker to join new social networks than boys, as shown by the 2022 JAMES study conducted by ZHAW and Swisscom. Boys, on the other hand, play games more often, with free games being particularly popular. Young people also have fewer friendships than ten years ago, but these are of a higher quality. The problem is that they are becoming more careless about data protection and sexual harassment has continued to increase.

JAMES Study 2020

Internet usage is increasingly shifting to smartphones

Young people in Switzerland use their mobile phones for longer during the week and especially at weekends than they did two years ago. Mobile phones are most commonly used for chatting, surfing the internet or social networking. The most popular social networks are Instagram, Snapchat and, more recently, TikTok. The problem is that more and more young people are being sexually harassed online.

JAMES Study 2018

Flat-rate streaming increasingly popular

Netflix, Spotify and the like set the tone among young people. Thanks to flat-rate streaming, over half of them have virtually unlimited access to films, music and games. They communicate primarily via mobile phone using Instagram, WhatsApp or Snapchat. Only one in five young people still uses Facebook regularly.

JAMES Study 2016

Video is king, mobile prevails

Everything different, everything new? The media usage behaviour of our young people is constantly changing. The fourth study in this series shows changes in the duration of usage. It shows that our children are increasingly visiting different content on the internet. And the form of communication is also developing more and more towards images and videos.

JAMES Study 2014

Mobile phones are the most popular leisure activity

Using mobile phones is the most popular leisure activity among young people in Switzerland. This was the case in 2012 and remains so in 2014, as confirmed by the latest JAMES study. The latest JAMES study shows the role that digital media really play in everyday life and how other areas of media use and leisure behaviour among young people have changed.
