Swisscom’s communication solution and seamless wireless network will improve the safety of competitors in the Patrouille des Glaciers. Swisscom Broadcast is also supplying the organisers with a DMR radio system offering 100% availability, and round-the-clock support.
The Patrouille des Glaciers is the world's largest ski mountaineering race. Around 1,800 teams with a total of 5,400 competitors pit their strength against extreme weather conditions and harsh terrain from Zermatt or Arolla to Verbier. With the telecom crew, which also includes Swisscom Broadcast employees, Swisscom is providing a seamless mobile wireless network. The temporary network, which covers five mountain peaks along the 53 km race route, will provide increased safety for competitors.
Swisscom is working closely with the Patrouille des Glacier team and the Armed Forces Command Support Organisation (CSO) to set up the wireless network. A Swisscom team is planning, building and operating the mobile network with base stations and repeaters along the route. Around 20 members of the Armed Forces are supporting erection work on site. The network is to have three base stations at Cab. Dent Blanche (3,507 m above sea level), at Cab. La Barma (2,458 m above sea level) and at the Mont Fort cable car station (3,308 m above sea level). Swisscom is also equipping all teams with small mobile phones that are specially designed for extreme weather conditions and feature an easy-to-use built-in emergency transmitter. Pressing the emergency button sets up a voice call to headquarters while automatically texting it with exact GPS coordinates.
Swisscom Broadcast is also building and operating a temporary DMR radio system for the organisers of the 16th Patrouille des Glaciers 2014. It allows the Patrouille des Glaciers team to stay in reliable radio contact with one another at all times. The Technical Operating Centre ensures smooth operation 24/7. The modular radio network consists of 14 base stations in seven locations, and is optimally adjusted to the network topology and radio coverage in high alpine terrain.
