3-2-1 tour radio is live

At the Tour de Suisse 2024, Swisscom Broadcast ensured that everyone stayed connected. The organisers relied on the Swisscom mobile network for radio communication and used almost 400 devices for the tour radio, security, traffic management, television, police, etc. Delivered through the Swisscom mobile network, the solution guaranteed optimal connectivity at the Tour de Suisse.

Future-proof, digital radio solution

Since 2021, the Swisscom mobile network has also been able to serve as a radio network. This is all thanks to the Push-to-Talk over Mobile technical innovation and product. It works the same as traditional radio, the only difference being that the connection is established over the mobile network instead of the radio network. Seamless communication was also supported across various devices, including walkie talkies, smartphones, tablets and desktops.

At the Tour de Suisse 2024, there were almost 400 devices in use – in cars, on motorbikes, by members of the traffic services and for the tour radio. 18 different channels were used for 18 different applications.

Push to Talk over Mobile replaced the former analogue radio solution. In the past, the entourage had to be accompanied by special vehicles equipped with repeater systems, which was complicated to organise. This time, the organisers opted for a digital radio solution connected over Swisscom’s mobile network, which provides mobile phone coverage for 99% of the Swiss population and also allowed excellent coverage along the Tour de Suisse. And in the event of capacity shortages on the mobile network at any point along the route, all push-to-talk devices were prioritised. Safety and communication are essential at the Tour de Suisse.
