Markus Gross is a professor of computer science at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zürich (ETH), head of the Computer Graphics Laboratory and director of Disney Research Zurich. Together with his excellent team, he researches future video technologies and the animation of people and faces, as well as computational cinematography and capture technologies.
His intensive research on behalf of the film industry was recognised in 2013, when he received the «Tech Oscar» of the Academy of Motion and Picture Art. Markus Gross and his team of researchers received the award for the development of software that can simulate smoke and explosions in films quickly and in great detail. The software is now being used by leading special effects studios and can be admired in blockbusters such as «Avatar».
