The twelve companies in the Intercity Group cover the entire range of real estate services, including sale, renting, brokerage, management and trust. The requirements placed on the IT infrastructure are high. Swisscom provides support with a powerful FlexPod solution.
At the Intercity Group, with its 160 employees, all applications and data have been operated in the central computer center for a long time now. The infrastructure used needed to be replaced, as it had become outdated and often suffered from poor performance. Moreover, it led to a substantial maintenance outlay. Michael Oppliger, Head of IT, describes the requirements that the new solution was to meet: «Our business is highly dynamic. When implementing new projects, we need to set up an entire virtual environment within a short space of time, including storage, a website, an intranet and complex databases. For this purpose we need a highly flexible, scalable and easy-to-operate infrastructure.»
Swisscom won over Intercity with its validated FlexPod solution. This comprises computing, storage, virtualisation and professional services (implementation) from a single source. «The validated design is a major advantage and played the key role in our decision», relates Michael Oppliger. «It guarantees maximum stability. Three manufacturers – Cisco, NetApp and Vmware – are involved. Having Swisscom as a single contact for design, implementation and maintenance certainly makes things easier for us. What’s more, Swisscom offered us the best solution at the most attractive price and was willing to get to know our core business – something that clearly enhanced the quality of the solution.»
What is your experience of FlexPod in everyday work? «The time gain is huge», enthuses Michael Oppliger. «In the past, it took us one or two days to set up a virtual server – now it takes us only three minutes. System monitoring was implemented in ten minutes, in contrast to the two weeks or so that we needed before. One particularly practical aspect is the web-supported interface of the FlexPod. Our new system runs extremely stably, even though we repeatedly exhaust the limits of its performance. It is im portant to realise that the ‹Out of the box› principle alone does not guarantee success. Our project was highly successful because Swisscom provided competent experts and because we invested sufficient time in the design phase».
