Voice over IP for City of Zurich

Organisation and Informatics of Zurich (OIZ) is the IT competence centre for the Zurich municipal authority. A heterogeneous telephony landscape that evolved over time resulted in higher costs of operation, support and procurement of replacement equipment.

Together with Swisscom, OIZ is setting new standards: By 2015 over 20,000 VoIP connections will be installed in the municipal authority. A central VoIP platform has already been built, and the existing terminals will now be successively replaced with VoIP telephones and applications.

Thanks to the uniform and centrally managed VoIP platform, OIZ is able to significantly reduce costs – of purchasing, operations and maintenance. Annual electricity consumption will drop by one million kilowatt-hours, thereby reducing the impact on the environment. In addition, the new platform makes it possible to integrate services that boost productivity, such as UCC.
