Do it yourself, interior decorating and gardening – anyone seeking high-quality items in these areas will find what they are looking for at Jumbo’s 41 Swiss stores. With around 1,500 employees, Jumbo is one of the heavyweights in the industry. For its new WLAN, the company puts its trust in Swisscom.
Mobile data acquisition equipment plays a central role at the 41 Jumbo stores. They are used to query prices, manage the warehouses, trigger order processes and print out labels. The staff scan around 50,000 items each day. The recorded data travels at lightning speed via WLAN, LAN and WAN to the company headquarters in Dietlikon. When the data acquisition equipment was nearing the end of its lifespan, the company’s managers evaluated a new generation of equipment. This placed demands on the existing WLAN that could not be met. In collaboration with the HSR Hochschule für Technik Rapperswil, Jumbo prepared an analysis of the new situation and drew up a requirements catalogue for a new and future-proof WLAN solution.
Equipping the 41 Jumbo sites with a high-performance WLAN presented Swisscom with some challenges. It was important to position the access points in exactly the right place and in the right quantity to achieve optimal coverage and performance. Furthermore, the transmission and reception performance needed to be finetuned. Thanks to the considerable expertise and experience of the Swisscom experts, the design impressed through its maximum leanness and cost efficiency. After a successful proof of concept, the roll-out followed in all stores within half a year. Jumbo received all services from Swisscom from a single source – from consulting through to integration of the new WLAN solution into the LAN/WAN infrastructure and maintenance.
«Swisscom provided us with a real WLAN expert», explains Urs Näf, Head of IT at Jumbo. «He tailored the design of our new WLAN to our requirements perfectly – considering the high level of complexity, this was a master stroke. The solution works smoothly, the feedback from the stores is very positive – our power users, in particular, commend the high performance and availability of the WLAN. What I also find exceptional is the excellent coordination of the Swisscom teams, who worked for us across the whole of Switzerland. And: Swisscom fought with the hardware manufacturers so that we would receive the latest access points – as the first in the country!»
