The essentials in brief:

The quality and speed of your WiFi signal can be improved by switching to a WiFi channel which is not yet or only lightly used.

Depending on the nature of your location, you may also find it helpful to use additional devices to extend the reach of your WiFi signal.

What is band steering?

The Internet-Box combines the usual 2.4 GHz with an additional, low-interference 5 GHz WLAN with several channels in a so-called dual band WLAN. Usually the end device (a mobile phone or tablet, for instance) selects the band to which it connects, since both bands use the same WLAN name (SSID). Devices typically connect to the 2.4GHz band, although the 5GHz band would provide a better experience. Band steering automatically ensures that devices connect to the optimum band based on diverse criteria and a sophisticated algorithm.

For simplicity’s sake, dual-band-capable devices always connect to the best network band to provide the best surfing experience. Once band steering is enabled, there is no longer any need for manual WLAN name (SSID) splitting.

How to configure band steering?

To configure band steering, enter http://internetbox or 192.168.1.1 in your internet browser and access the Internet-Box web portal. If necessary, you can exclude devices from band steering.

  1. Click WLAN in the left menu
  2. Select the band steering tab
  3. Ensure that ‘Activate WLAN band steering’ is checkmarked
  4. Select which devices are to be steered or not

Using additional devices to optimise WiFi

Swisscom offers the WLAN repeater as a home network accessory which can extend the reach of your WLAN.

Place the WLAN repeater half way between the router and the place the WLAN needs to reach. This will then allow you to use WLAN to surf the internet on the balcony, for example.
